Construction well underway on new office extension for BUUK in Woolpit
Four Suffolk companies have been working together on a project that will enhance the working environment of an energy utilities business based in Woolpit.
Wincer Kievenaar Architects and Gill Associates were initially introduced to BUUK by Superstructures to conduct feasibility studies on the options available to the business, which currently has its staff spread over four separate buildings on the Woolpit Business Park.
A decision was made to build an extension to the existing main office at Energy House that would enable all the staff to be located together in one building providing open plan office space, break-out areas, meeting rooms, shower facilities and a fully equipped canteen.
As Wincer Kievenaar moved onto the architectural design, Superstructures assisted with the structural design elements of the new offices and Gill Associates acted as employer’s agent. Then when planning was granted, Barnes Construction commenced work on the three-storey building which will double the capacity of the existing facility.
James Potter, MD of Superstructures explained how the fluidity of the project was helped by the fact that all the businesses involved were familiar with each other and how each other worked. “Together as a team, we have been able to work around a number of complex issues on this project including mitigating the disturbance to the ongoing operations of BUUK. One example is that the structural design of the extension incorporates a cantilevered steel frame that over sails the existing office building and supports its own weight; meaning that we minimise the disruption caused to Energy House and time-consuming strengthening works to the existing steel frame and foundations.”
Paul Edwards, Customer Services Director at BUUK, commented “The collaboration of these local companies working together as one team, has proven to be a great experience for all of us at BUUK. The team have done a brilliant job at keeping disruption to a minimum, enabling us to continue with the day to day running of our business. The new extension is progressing smoothly, and we look forward to providing some new and improved facilities for our staff when completed early next year.”
